LLB (Stell)
Certificate in Medicine and Law (UP/UNISA)

Johann Roux is the owner and lecturer at Ethicscpd, a company specializing in medical law courses for healthcare professionals. He was conferred the LLB-degree by the University of Stellenbosch in 2005 and completed a certificate course in Medicine and Law presented by the University of Pretoria/UNISA during the same year.

Following his graduation Johann was employed as a research assistant at the Stellenbosch University Law Faculty. His duties included lecturing classes to first and second year law students and to assist Dr Bhadra Ranchod with research on the topic of HIV and the Law. During this time Johann was elected to serve on the Stellenbosch University Central Disciplinary Panel, which was responsible for conducting disciplinary hearings against students enrolled at all Faculties of Stellenbosch University.

Johann was awarded a scholarship to do postgraduate studies on Trust Law at a prominent University in Mexico but given his early interest in medical law he chose instead to commence his articles of clerkship at a Cape Town law firm, a law firm specializing in personal injury matters. Having successfully completed his articles of clerkship he was admitted as an attorney with right of appearance in the High Court during December 2007.

Following on from his keen interest in medical law Johann gained employment at a National law firm specializing in medical law matters on behalf of medical professionals. During his 7-year tenure at this law firm Johann worked exclusively in the medical law department and was eventually promoted to the position of senior associate. He gained extensive experience in various medical law matters including civil claims for damages, inquests and HPCSA complaint matters.

Johann became involved in medical negligence claims on behalf of patients during the past 6 years and was employed as the Head of the Medical Law Department at two very prominent personal injury law firms. In 2020 he started his own law firm which deals with medical law matters on behalf of both medical professionals and patients.

In 2018 Johann was elected as one of only 25 attorneys in South Africa to participate in a course hosted in East London by the Law Society of South Africa. The course, entitled ‘Judicial Skills Training for Legal Practitioners’ was aimed at training attorneys the relevant skills of judicial adjudication with the view of potentially becoming acting judges of the High Court in due course. The course was presented by various Judge-Presidents, Deputy-Judge Presidents and other Judges of the High Court.

Johann has a very keen interest in lecturing on the topic of medical law. Since 2008 he has been presenting a medical law and ethics course to medical professionals throughout South Africa and Namibia and has also presented lectures on medical law to 5th year medical students at Stellenbosch University. He has published articles on the issue of medical law and has been a speaker at medical and dental congresses throughout South Africa.

Johann also has a very keen interest in aviation and is currently pursuing a private pilot’s licence. Given his family history in aviation dating back to the 1960’s Johann feels quite at home cruising around the beautiful Cape Peninsula in the cockpit of a Piper Warrior.
